Transform: Old Coffee Mugs

One of my favorite magazines, Real Simple often talks about getting more mileage out of random things from your junk drawer. Most of the time I don’t have a lot of use for them, because they’re a little more mom-oriented, so I decided to make up a few of my own.

Today’s topic: Coffee Mugs

If your family is like mine, you probably have a shelf in your China cabinet loaded with cracked and chipped mugs that you simply cannot throw out. Every time we travel we get two things from our new destination: a deck of cards, and a mug. So when that cute mug from the White Mountains cracks, you need to keep it even if now it’s just another pencil cup, right? WRONG! Do this instead and you won’t just salvage those hard-earned collectables…you’ll actually use them!

1. Garden pot: Great for a kitchen window sill. Fill with potting soil, plant a seed about an inch below the surface and keep in full sun. Unless your mug is actually more of a vase, you probably want to stick with something small like wild flowers or herbs. Basil is my favorite for this.

2. Candle Holder: In my neck of the woods, the winters are pretty harsh and the power tends to flicker. We have a million small, fairly useless candles, and some huge ones that drip all over the table. Take these large out-of-the-jar candles and put them in the mug. They don’t have to fit exactly, but should be wide enough that don’t wobble when you move the mug (major safety hazard!). It’s great for when the power goes out because you can hold the mug handle as you walk around in the dark. Much safer!

3. Baking Dish: Everyone’s heard of soup mugs. This idea just takes that a step further. Before baking, be sure to spray the inside of the mug with nonstick spray. Then fill with your favorite cake mix, brownie batter, or even mac and cheese, and bake away! Perfect for jazzing up casseroles or pasta bakes, and making something truly eye-catching at your next dinner party.

If you have any other ideas for how to use old coffee mugs I’d love to hear them! Feel free to leave comments to keep the ideas flowing.
